A challenging profession, Nursing is dedicated to the service of humanity. The ability to understand and soothe are as important to a nurse's career as expertise in Nursing techniques and care. SRM College of Nursing is a member of SRM Group of educational Institutions for higher learning functions under Valliammai Society. The society was founded in the year 1975 by the Chancellor, a well-known educationist, for promoting the cause of education. The College of Nursing was established in the year 1992, at Bharathi Salai, Ramapuram, Chennai 89. Presently, SRM College of Nursing is located at SRM Nagar, Potheri, Kattankulathur, Kancheepuram District in a pleasant and spacious campus, at 1 km distance from Potheri railway station & Potheri bus stop.  Many of our graduates are well placed both in India and overseas. Today, with 5 Departments and 5 different courses, SRM College of Nursing has left an indelible mark on Curricular, Co-curricular, and Extracurricular activities. These ventures help the students to evolve into truly global nursing professionals and citizens.

The college trains and prepares skillful nurses with a healing touch. The teaching methods include Lecture, discussions, symposia, seminars, panel discussions, debates etc. The sessions are made lively using multimedia projectors and other media, moulding the students into  highly confident and resourceful persons, endowed with the unique qualities of love, courage, and warmth.

Curriculum 

The syllabus is reviewed biannually by the Board of studies and ratified by the University's Academic Council and Indian Nursing Council. The curriculum follows the Revised Indian Nursing Council Syllabus. The undergraduate program provides an understanding of the health sciences with a strong foundation in the basic sciences. The syllabus is structured to teach students core nursing subjects and English, Computer Science, Management, Education, Research and Biostatistics for all round development of the students. The postgraduate program gives additional skills in administrative and management areas, while allowing students to specialize in Medical & Surgical Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing.

Parent Hospital

SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, SRM Nagar, Kattankulathur campus, SRM University is a 1320 bedded multi-specialty teaching hospital, which is well equipped with state of the art diagnostic and treatment facilities, run by well-experienced and competent health team professionals. The Hospital has various departments such as Medicine, Surgery, Peadiatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedic, Ophthalmology, ENT, Intensive Care, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Dialysis unit etc.  It provides 24 hours causality, Laboratory and X-Ray services. The SRM/STRATUS Centre is a highly advanced educational centre which utilises state-of-the-art technology including computer controlled patient simulation system and individualised task trainers; taking medical education to the next level. The SRM Medical College Hospital is approved by the Medical Council of India and Government of India.

Community Areas

SRM College of Nursing has adopted 2 villages – East Potheri & Vallanchery where the students take care of community people and refer them to the hospital as and when necessary. Apart from the adopted villages, the students are taken to the Rural health centre - located at Mamandur and the Urban health centre at Maraimalai Nagar. Both are managed by SRM Medical College and Hospital. Services provided in the community areas are,

SRM Nursing students are active in the community health centers that offers aid to the community around the college. Regular immunization drives, maternity, childcare as well as treatment of minor ailments and referral services are carried out. Other services carried out by the students are,

  • Treatment of patients with minor ailments and referral to SRM Multi-Speciality Hospital as and when needed.
  • Imparting health education in the community as well as the clinical area.
  • Collaboration with PHCs.
  • Participation in Health Camps, Eye Camps, Blood donation camps etc.

Alliances With Other Institutions

Besides training at SRM University's multi-specialty hospital, students also intern at a number of allied hospitals including Kanchi Kamakodi Child Trust Hospital, Nungambakkam, Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk, Government General Hospital, Tambaram Taluk, National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, The Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs, (RUHSA), Vellore etc.  

Recognition 

The college has been accredited by NAAC and was graded A, an important milestone in offering quality education. It is recognized by the Indian Nursing Council (INC), which periodically inspects the college teaching facilities that are provided to the students. The college has obtained recognition from The Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has also recognized the college, an important achievement that paves the way for research funding.

  • 1992: SRM College of Nursing was established.
  • 1993: SRM School of Nursing was established.
  • 2005: College of Nursing was brought under the ambit of SRM University
  • 2005: M.Sc (Nursing) program was introduced.
  • 2006: College became a constituent college of SRM University
  • 2008: PhD program was initiated.
  • 2009: P.B.B.Sc Program was introduced.
  • 2012: College was accredited with A Grade by NAAC.
  • 2012: MoU signed with La Trobe University, Australia, regarding Study Abroad Program.
